Every canvas carries two bodies of work: the one that is shown, and the one that is sanded away beneath it. The second is never seen, and yet it is the reason the first can stand.

We are taught to prize what is visible. But the spirit does not announce itself in full light. It waits in the undercoat, in the hours before a single mark is made public.
